Intersection of EP and HF: What’s Next at the HF–EP Interface: AI, Sensors, and Novel Technologies for Longitudinal Care
Description
In this webinar, Dr. Suneet Mittal, Director of Electrophysiology and Chair of the Cardiovascular Service Line at the Valley Health System, looks at what's next for heart failure and EP care. He makes the case that atrial fibrillation and heart failure are chronic diseases that need continuous care, not just episodic procedures. He explains why AF burden should be treated as a dynamic vital sign, and how sensors, wearables, and implanted devices are expanding what clinicians can monitor between visits. He also discusses how AI can turn this data into clear clinical decisions, the real-world barriers to adoption, and why interoperability is a patient safety issue. He closes with his vision of an EP clinic that manages heart failure risk and cardiovascular trajectories, not just rhythm.

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the bidirectional relationship between atrial fibrillation and heart failure and why both require longitudinal care.
  • Explain why AF burden is a more meaningful measure than a binary AF diagnosis, including its link to heart failure hospitalization and mortality.
  • Identify current and emerging sensor technologies, including CIED diagnostics, PA pressure sensors, and wearables, used to monitor heart failure and AF.
  • Discuss how AI can convert continuous monitoring data into actionable clinical decisions.
  • Recognize key barriers to adoption, including false alarms, data overload, interoperability gaps, and reimbursement challenges.
