Intersection of EP and HF: Heart Failure Today: Epidemiology, Phenotypes, and Staging Across HFrEF and HFpEF
Description
In this session, Dr. Roberta Florido, heart failure and transplant cardiologist at the University of Utah, gives a practical snapshot of heart failure today. She covers how common heart failure is, how it is defined as a clinical syndrome, and how it is phenotyped by ejection fraction and staged along the disease trajectory. She compares HFrEF and HFpEF patients side by side, explains why HFpEF is so hard to diagnose, and shows how tools like the H2FPEF score and provocative testing can help. She also highlights the close link between HFpEF and atrial fibrillation, the higher lifetime risk of HFpEF in women, and why HFpEF should never be considered benign. She closes with five key numbers every clinician should know.

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the current prevalence of heart failure and the growing share of HFpEF.
  • Define heart failure as a clinical syndrome and classify it by ejection fraction and by guideline stage.
  • Compare the clinical profiles of patients with HFrEF and HFpEF.
  • Apply diagnostic tools, including the H2FPEF score and provocative testing, to identify HFpEF, and recognize the limits of natriuretic peptides.
  • Explain the relationship between HFpEF and atrial fibrillation and its impact on patient outcomes.
